326: SVARTKONST

I think the thing that surprised me most about Svartkonst after hearing (and loving) their sophomore release, ‘Black Waves’, and reading up on my new discovery was the fact it was all one guy. One-man black metal projects are nothing new, of course, and there are many, many incredibly talented people out there responsible for such things. But, with Svartkonst, Rickard Törnqvist’s blackened death monster, I was genuinely surprised to find such a complex and expansive work was the creation of one mind. Put simply, it’s fucking impressive.

And Svartkonst is fucking impressive. It’s brash, and bold, and a grand blackened death metal statement full of speed and fury. 2020’s ‘Black Waves’ was an exciting discovery for me. It’s 40 minutes of relentless metal (which, again, I’d never have guessed was all one person).

After developing an obsession with that album, I then explored the 2018 debut, ‘Devil’s Blood’, and it only confirmed it – Törnqvist is an incredible artist. For a debut album, it was surprisingly polished, complex, and well written. The second album wasn’t a fluke, Svartkonst is 2 for 2 on absolutely kick ass monsters of albums.

In a space of three years, Svartkonst has given us two sensationally evil albums. I readily await what comes next because this track record can’t be ignored.
