A combination of doom-tinged progressive metal, fantastic songwriting, and absolutely incredible vocals makes Oceans of Slumber a truly special band.
They are usually labelled prog metal because, I guess, it’s the genre that most readily applies. The songs are longer, with more complex structures, and different sections. But Oceans of Slumber are really not like any other prog metal band I’ve ever heard. This has a touch of doom, almost a gothic melodeath vibe. They really are in a league of their own.
With each new album, Oceans of Slumber have further sharpened that sound, growing into an amazingly unique band whose new albums are a real event. Their latest album, 2020s self titled offering, was an incredible achievement. Clocking in at over an hour, it is beautiful, epic, awe inspiring metal. (And they manage to do amazing justice to a cover of Type O Negative’s ‘Wolf Moon’ – an achievement in itself).
One of the things that sets Oceans of Slumber apart from the pack is Cammie Gilbert. Her vocals are unlike anything elsewhere in heavy metal. Beautiful, classic, powerful, and just utterly remarkable.
Oceans of Slumber are one of a kind. Their darker take on prog metal feels more personal, introspective, than the bombast we normally expect from the genre. Importantly though, they still nail that grand scale, making for an epic and bewitching sound.
