1349, whose name comes from the year the Black Death reached their homeland, are a Norwegian black metal band formed in 1997.
Since Satyricon drummer Frost joined in 2000, the lineup has remained mostly unchanged. The core four of Ravn, Seidemann, Archaon, and Frost have performed on every album.
1349 are pure Norwegian black metal. Fast, heavy, and dark. But they also have fantastically complex production, and complex compositions – not necessarily common for the genre.
Ravn’s vocals are powerful, and evil, and push the tracks into even darker realms. With both snarls and haunting cleans, Ravn is far from the standard black metal vocalist. But when he unleashes his “proper” black metal voice it’s next fucking level.
2019’s “The Infernal Pathway”, their most recent album to date, was actually my first real experience with 1349. However, I immediately realised this was an incredible black metal band, and one worth a back catalogue deep dive.
I’m so glad I did. This band is consistent in their sound, and have produced a wealth of brilliant black metal.
