169: BEAST IN BLACK

When Anton Kabanen left Battle Beast, he gathered an international roster of musicians – from Greece, Hungary, and Finland, and formed Beast in Black, a band that are basically everything good about european power metal, with an added 80s arena rock flair that results in one of the most sensational, joyful sounds on the planet.

Beast in Black songs are full of big, grand guitars, sweeping keyboards, and countless crowd-singalong arena moments. Yannis Papadopoulos nail that classic 80s power metal vocal style, while still managing to put his own recognisable spin on it. This band not only manages to brilliantly recreate that exciting and uplifting power metal style, they also pull off a perfect ballad (a cornerstone of the era).

I was fortunate enough to bet their for Beast In Black’s big, hometown headline show in Helsinki at the end of 2019, and it was absolutely incredible. The atmosphere was electric and the crowd ate it up. They had every ounce of the bravado and showmanship that was an intrinsic part of that 80s scene – and for such a relativey new band to nail it so effortlessy was amazing to experience first hand.

It is hard to believe this is a band with only two albums under their belt, but I can’t wait to see what they do next, because they’re well on their way to being bigger than ever.
