Sarin are a Toronto-based post/sludge metal band whose leviathan, crushing riffs and powerful (yet sparingly used) vocals caught my attention via their new album, ‘You Can’t Go Back’, earlier this year.
When I delved beyond my surface-level impressions, however, I found music that, while still quite heavy, also had a lot of of beauty and some gentler moments.
There is also an incredible groove throughout. Endless headbanging riffs propel to songs forward like a runaway steamroller – steady, heavy, and unstoppable.
Where other bands of a similar style might take a heavy-handed approach with relentless, thunderous noise, Sarin’s sound is special because the heaviness is delivered with a gentler, more deliberate touch. The result is electrifying, fist-pumping metal, and one of my personal favourite discoveries of 2021.
