128: ALESTORM

โ€œPirate metalโ€ might seem a strange and hard to conceptualise notion, but then you hear Alestorm and it all suddenly seems so clear.

Alestorm are a Scottish pirate-themed folk/power metal band. Their music is related to pirates both thematically and stylistically. Lyrically, they tell tales of rum, treasure, and the seven seas, while musically incorporating the accordions and an infectious sea shanty vibe.

Itโ€™s music that, in many ways, functions as a modern sea shanty – with raucous crowds raising drinks and merrily singing along to the catchy tunes.

Alestormโ€™s formula is clearly successful, as these crowds have only continued to get bigger throughout their 15-year career, and itโ€™s no surprise.

With brilliantly catchy choruses and fun tales of piracy encouraging singalongs and wild fun, Alestorm are a uniquely wonderful force in metal.
