This might seem like an unexpected choice to write about, but there’s something genuinely special about Steve ‘N’ Seagulls that might sometimes be overlooked because the concept – bluegrass covers of popular rock and metal songs – might be seen as tongue and cheek.

I can’t quite explain why I fell head over heels for what these guys do, I just know that it moves me.

If you’d asked me before this discovery, I’d probably say I didn’t like bluegrass music. I mean, why would I? It’s not even heavy. But with what Steve ‘N’ Seagulls do, it’s as though by stripping the compositions back, reworking them in such a sincere and gentle style, the inherent beauty of the song is highlighted free of buzzing electric guitars and crash cymbals.

I’m sure your first reaction when hearing one of these covers is to laugh. It’s silly. But, pretty quickly, your connection to the original track will return to you, and you’ll hear the cover for what it really is – surprisingly beautiful.

I promise you, you’ll have a deeper appreciation of ‘November Rain’ after hearing a bluegrass cover by some Finns.
