052: MEGATON SWORD

Sometimes it’s okay to long for nostalgic time, perhaps even a time before we were born. In the case of metal, that’s what “traditional metal” is all about. Or “epic metal”. Or just heavy metal. Whatever the fuck you want to call it, you know it when you hear it.

Trad metal is that big riffing, usually wailed clean vocals, and a bombastic rhythm section. It’s “meat and potatoes” metal. And sometimes that’s EXACTLY what one needs. Among other things, I most definitely have found myself with a reinvigorated love of trad metal over the last 12-18 months, and the best newcomer to this sub genre is most definitely the mighty Megaton Sword.

Megaton Sword were only formed in 2018 and yet, with just one album (and an EP) have firmly planted their flag in the trad metal scene. This is music that could’ve just as easily been released in 1976 – and in this subgenre this is a sterling achievement.

The perfectly titled album, “Blood Hails Steel – Steel Hails Fire”, is absolutely wall to wall heavy metal. Everything about this album is pure, unadulterated metal.

The riffs are solid, the vocals fit the music perfectly, and the hooks are so catchy you’ll be singing them for days.

Megaton Sword are a brand new band with old world style, and they do what they do masterfully. This is a celebration of the first true heavy metallers by a band that know exactly what they’re doing, and an amazingly fun listen that I can’t recommend enough.
