012: MINDLESS SELF INDULGENCE

Apparently the genres that best describe Mindless Self Indulgence are ‘electropunk’ and ‘industrial rock’, but I think ‘batshit’ is just as apt a label. MSI are a raucous combination of almost-funky, late 80s-sounding synth and bass grooves backed by dirty, industrial elements and an alien frontman with his tongue planted firmly in his cheek.

Their final album (before their thus-far-unbroken hiatus), the wonderfully titled “How I Learned To Stop Giving A Shit And Love Mindless Self indulgence” is packed with some of the catchiest, most ridiculous, (and, once or twice, surprisingly poignant) songs you’ll hear, and is pretty reflective of the quality you’ll find throughout their back catalogue.

Mindless Self Indulgence are basically what I assume Martians would sound like if they grew up on stuff like Duran Duran but then someone showed them Antichrist Superstar.

Translation – it’s batshit, but somehow it works.

The bass, the rock, the mic, the treble,
I like my coffee black, just like my metal.
